Happy 162nd Birthday, Jane Addams!
They tell me I should fall in love with women who are alive, but my one true love will always be Jane Addams (1860-1935). Who else has won a Nobel Peace Prize and also has Plaque #1 on the Castro St. rainbowhonorwalk in San Francisco? She invented the discipline of social work; helped inaugurate the NAACP and the ACLU; created the first citizenship classes, kindergarten, and children's court in Chicago; and fostered the progressive movement with a diverse array of "residents."
